Another year, another GS event for the Andre Agassi Foundation (16 yrs!!!). An amazing achievement to get the school to a point of financial security forever and so a huge hats off to Andre Agassi for pulling this off. As this editorial rightly said, 'an amazing accomplishment'.

Who knew it would be Andre Agassi who would be the person to change the well known adage of 'what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas' to 'what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas' and for the right reasons. From Vegas to Philly to Milwaukee to 75 other places around US.
Remember reading somewhere, when you have someone willing to be by your side for every step you take in life, even mis-steps turn into eloquent dance moves. Andre has one such person in his life right now.
As usual, Steffi and Andre both look great. Loved Steffi's dress.
A video link to the same event and pretty sure, many more to be uploaded in the next few days.
Lots of news in the local media on the eve of this event and since obviously, it includes Steffi as well, here are few of them.

By the way, if 'OPEN' is ever made into a movie, whom would you want as 'Steffi Graf' as it seems like a possibility in the near future. And none other than Spielberg is in the line.

New video clip of Steffi about her business partnership with Nintendo. And Steffi is doing a fabulous job of keeping her fans updated these days.

Didn't know that October has another important day for Steffi, the first match of her turning pro was Oct 24th, 1982.

Although unrelated, have to give huge props to Petra Kvitova to win the WTA year end championship event, a great year for her and many more to come. A promising result for women's tennis to see a youngster making her mark. And yes, she doesn't grunt or shreik.

Weekly Musings - 8
On the 10th Wedding Anniversary, time to revisit this old article from People Magazine announcing their wedding. A big cheers to both of them and wishing for many more such anniversaries. Not sure if it was intended in such a way but goes to show that it does not matter how or where you marry as long as you are marrying for the right reasons (sounding like Mike Agassi, right!!).

And yes, she is playing in Halle next year. As some one else said, imagine Graf and Rafa playing mixed doubles, 'GRAFA' team will be great to watch although not going to happen.

Pitfalls of being very humble, down to earth and not carrying an "air of importance" look is that even the security guard wouldn't recognize who you are. Come on Steffi, you have a long way to go in the 'diva' department, just ask some of the former/current players.

Couple of references of Steffi in Wertheim's mailbag (seems like it is the mailbag day this week). While Steffi is no BJK (nor does she behave like she belongs to that group, doesn't even consider herself the greatest), to say she will never be remembered for her contribution to the sport is ridiculous. How can one measure great players 'contribution' to the game? Not sure in which context the word 'cipher' was used but me and my family learnt about tennis because of her and no she was not a 'cipher in her heyday'. Her presence of the court was enough for many to watch the game.
Loved this reference in the same mailbag (might be referring to the day when Steffi and Andre were hitting, the videos in the last post).
"I was in Las Vegas this past weekend at the Darling Tennis Center playing in a tournament when none other than Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf took center court and hit against an unknown (to me), albeit good player. Come to find out, the guy paid $20K to take a lesson from the two; the money went to Agassi's foundation. They couldn't have been more gracious, talking to fans, taking pictures, signing every last autograph. We were leaving the facility and saw two black Escalades pulling out (the tinted window, bulletproof, celebrity kind), thinking 'There they go, Andre and Steffi.' But no, the humble pair walked out together (alone) and into their normal car about five minutes later, without an entourage and back to their lives. The Escalades, we found out later, belonged to the guy who paid for the lesson. Ha!"

In contrast to Jon Wertheim's theory (spark your youtube comment), Kimiko Date, the ageless wonder believes Steffi Graf can be no:1 again even in this era. Have to agree with her that it is not just the game but the mind that plays a huge role in winning in tennis. She has played when Steffi was around and she has played against the current generation, so her opinion counts more than sports writers.

Steffi's comments on Indy car crash were published on multiple sites. Not a surprise since at one point, the two Michaels in her life were into race car driving. Loved this description: "typically sensible, stoic and stabilizing words"

Another interview of Steffi during her recent Berlin visit. As usual, a humble, down to earth answer from a person who can easily be ranked among the top female atheletes from all around the world. Here is her response to being selected as the best German female athelete:
"That's a huge compliment. But it is hard for me to see me like this or to find justifications for it. I much rather just talk about others than about me".

Weekly Musings-6
October is a busy month in the Agassi/Graf household for various reasons, also for most of the years, even the 'GrandSlam' event for Andre's foundation is in the same month. Added to that, there is the 'Champion Series' stop in Vegas this year. So lots to look forward to for Agassi/Graf family.
An interview excerpt from last week but somehow missed it in my last post.
Here is a rough English translation:
"Motherhood is my most important job"Saturday, 1 October 2011 02:42
Only a few times a year at most, is the seven-time Wimbledon champion Steffi Graf (42) in Germany. In the adopted home of Las Vegas, she takes care of her children Jaden Gil (9) and Jaz Elle (7) along with her husband,Andre Agassi. This week, Graf, who has finished her career in 1999, opened the first German Tea Lounge at the Friedrichstrasse in Q110. She has talked to Kati Degenhardt in a relaxed atmosphere at the opening.
Berliner Morgenpost: Ms. Graf, how and where you usually relax?
Stefanie Graf: I'll relax when I'm with my family and we can spend time together. But when I have the feeling I need some time for me, I do sports. They still play an important role in my life. Not quite so often as I used to, but still a couple of times per week. And I can gather myself and physically and mentally recharge.
Berliner Morgenpost: What does pleasure mean for you?
Stefanie Graf: There is pleasure on many levels, such as eating or drinking or to be in an environment in which we feel comfortable.
Berliner Morgenpost: Has your perception changed over the years of enjoyment? Did you have to learn to enjoy?
Stefanie Graf: I already got a better understanding of time: how important it is to have time, and how quickly it passes. I live my life now more aware of that. Especially with children, we learn to appreciate more the time that one has.
Berliner Morgenpost: Speaking of time. There are several anniversaries in October in the family Graf / Agassi.
Stefanie Graf: We really have a great month before us, that's right.
Stefanie Graf: My husband and I do not put so much emphasis on special days or anniversaries - every single day is important to us. For the children it is of course something else, they enjoy especially on their birthdays. Our ten year old (anniversary) is certainly a beautiful day but nothing special is planned.
Stefanie Graf: We often start with tea in the day, even the children. For me this has a certain tradition as even my parents were drinking tea at home, and so I grew up with mint tea - I still remain faithful to the herbal teas. The children also love mint tea - not that I've influenced them.
Stefanie Graf: Of course, if the children once a pancake supper wish, that's okay too. Both children are very active and like healthy eating, because we have to worry about.
Berliner Morgenpost: Bake in Las Vegas to the old recipes from the homeland?
Stefanie Graf: From time to time. When is our first cake on the table, it is eaten immediately. We cook generally very happy with the whole family, even with the kids, and enjoy it, all to be together in the kitchen. Our children have their own cookbooks, and then there's still the old German recipe book that my mother has recovered recently.
Stefanie Graf ... a fireplace, we actually have a fireplace that burns with real wood.
Berliner Morgenpost: Will there also once drank a whiskey?
Stefanie Graf: No, I have tasted alcohol before. It is rare than a glass of wine on the table. Maximum when we go eat. Actually, we enjoy the comfort of your home. For us to play the most from in a room, the kitchen is large and goes into the living room over, which often turns into a game room. What we do is to completely loose.
Berliner Morgenpost: They open up a tea lounge in Berlin. How does that feel they can make your own with a name advertising?
Stefanie Graf: The name alone is not decisive. Product quality must fit with me, otherwise lacks any credibility. And how does it feel? In public appearances I'm often nervous and have a stomach flutter. I am not used to such scenes, because I'm so rarely in public.
Berliner Morgenpost: The performances will take your promotional as long as your job. But that's your job?
Stefanie Graf: My job is primarily to be a mother. That's my biggest role. In addition, my Children for Tomorrow Foundation at heart and several business engagements, for example, with my fitness chain. This work is fun to me and calls me.
Berliner Morgenpost: Nevertheless, you rarely visit to Germany and Europe. Have you traveled enough?Stefanie Graf: I'm still curious about the world. This curiosity can probably never be silent. I'm still happy to go, but ultimately it is important to me to be with the family and children. Because of my sports career I'm lucky to be able me to organize my time off today and to be there for my family. This is the most important thing for me.

Varvara Lapchenko and her mother with Steffi Graf as tweeted by Lapchenko. Lapchenko played at the Las Vegas Open, held in mid-September, along with Oudin and lost in the doubles final.
An archive from the past: Loved this comment from Reene Richards and this was way back in 1987 when Steffi has one only one slam to her name. And coincidentally, there was the ESPN documentary on Reene Richards last weekend.
"Steffi Graf's the kind of uinque player who comes along once in a decade. She could have been born on the moon, and she still would be Steffi Graf".
Reading this article from 1987 and amazed how things haven't changed much in 24 yrs despite wild success, fame and popularity and how she could have her priorities set straight from such an young age.
" She is mored awed by Evert's and Navratilova's public speaking than by their tennis games".
"And she hasn't focussed on the money at all. And she's turned down a number of products and deals as unsuitable, including a 500,000 dollar offer to pose nude for a men's magazine".
"I never think about the money she says, my father handles that. I have a credit card; if I see something I can buy it. Besides, the way I live, I don't need much".
"And I like to read. Through the whole tournament, I read Stephen King and I also like Hemingway". Hemingway? " He sees things in a different way".
Hemingway and Steffi Graf, now that is a pleasant surprise.
Just wondering how Andre got introduced to books as he mentioned in 'OPEN' that he got late into reading books and that it will be the top priority for his kids.

Weekly Musings - 5
Wondering if there were any 30th B'day features for Steffi Graf or Martina Navratilova. Not that Serena doesn't deserve one but just shows how the media has changed over the years.
The discussion was interesting and most picked Steffi as the best ever although she prefers to have Martina in that spot. Even Jon Wertheim mellowed down a little bit from his 'Serena is best ever' claim from last year, although deep down, seems like he still believes it. This particular comment from him seemed very interesting at the least to me: "Optional homework: Spark up YouTube. Then watch some of Serena's matches. Then watch some of the other candidates play. It's like comparing Albert Pujols to Rogers Hornsby, Tiger Woods to Sam Snead. It's barely the same sport". How can you punish Steffi, Martina and Chrissie for being born in a different era and assume they are going to lose against Serena because Serena is powerful in the current generation?
I can't help but resist this comparision to a teenager saying: "Cmon Mr.Wertheim, just chill out. The competition is so tough compared to your generation, so I am way better than you than you were back in the day. Just go back and read what you were taught at the same age as me and see how much more we have to do now to get good scores, no way you can do better than me in this cut throat competition. So stop lecturing him now". Wonder what Professor Wertheim would say if one his students said that to him !!!!! Sounds absurd but hey, sports or education or any achievement for that matter, you can never compare across generations.
Also, in a recent mailbag, he said why not be 'Wozrena' fans, can support Wozniacki during non-slams and Serena during slams but what he forgets to take into account in this particular discussion is that Evert, Navratilova, Court, Graf and Seles and many more in the past were Wozrenas, they played even a non-slam like a slam.

Steffis' interview to a German TV (rough English translation):
Steffi Graf to her rare public appearances:
I feel tense and nervous, no question. Have tingling in the morning and you know that you stand back in the public and I'm not quite so much accustomed to. My Life in Las Vegas is somewhat secluded and there are moments in the spotlight more often. And as I said, I was very nervous this morning and am even now.
Her life in Las Vegas and its role as a mother:
Of course, this is a very different life. For one has to do with the fact that I have finished my career and less travel, live a quieter life. Secondly, the fact that we are based in Las Vegas. Many people have crazy ideas of Las Vegas. This is actually a pretty normal life, to be honest. With us, of course, the children are foremost and the priority, because of course everything revolves around them, mainly because I'm their mother. We live just outside the city center, which of course is peppered with many casinos. But it's interesting in a different way. We are near the mountains in a small suburban town, where the children go to school as usual and have their friends, because there are playgrounds and a normal environment.
The tennis star on the cultural differences in education:
I'm German and of course bring a lot of German to Las Vegas. But the world is also closer together so what is typically German, yet ultimately, what's more typically American? I believe that so many cultures mix with each other and that's really the beautiful too. But the German language, I naturally brought into the house, the two (kids) perhaps talk a little bit less, but they understand. The German food is also placed on the table, without question - and there are some traditions that I have of course brought along.
About the values they want to teach their children:
For us it is important that we make children very aware of their surroundings, to others. Respect for others is crucial to respond to others. But also cohesion and loyalty.
Among the sporting talent of their children: We'll see, but they are definitely very active and have already tried several sports before, in some they are stuck. Jaden plays as much like baseball, jazz and hip-hop loves to ride. Both are talented in snowboarding, as we also look forward to the coming winter. You try it, but are also very interested in playing music, instruments, have fun at creative people. We hope that they find their passion and self discovery. We will be pleased to accompany them happy, but they have to discover for themselves.
Present commitment to sport: The daily sport I need no longer determined, but I need sports, definitely! Naturally I have had the opportunity to learn through my sport, how well one is doing. Whether that is now physical, the expenditure, but also ultimately mental, a little off, to take the time for themselves, to focus on yourself and to get energy from it. I'm still trying a few times a week, it is of course not as regular as before, but it's still very important.
About her happy and scandal-free relationship with Andre Agassi: We are quite clear in what we have sought and we found each other. People meet, and you look in the eyes and can tell, there is no recipe for it. That we have similar values that we know fairly precisely what is important to us than anything else we can talk and talk and then find a way.
About her adopted country America: It was the right step to follow my husband, absolutely, no question! I've never been called into question. My home is finally here and in America. The fact that I have with my foundation here in Germany and am now on as promotional tour for "Teakennae Tea" on the road, there are always things that bring me to Germany. I am very happy.

A snippet from this interview was covered in most news all over the globe. Here is one of many.

On 20th anniversary of Steffi being the youngest player to achieve 500 career wins, here is an archive from the past covering the news. Evert was a little older than Graf but did that with a few less matches than Steffi (545 mtahces vs. 569 matches).
"Victory No. 500 for Graf: Steffi Graf reached a career milestone by becoming the youngest woman to win 500 matches as a professional. Graf needed just 36 minutes to defeat Petra Langrova of Czechoslovakia, 6-0, 6-1, in the Leipzig International tournament in Germany. Graf is 22 years 3 months old. Chris Evert, who held the record, was 22 years 9 months old when she defeated Nancy Richey at the 1977 United States Open for her 500th victory. Graf set the record playing in 569 matches, but Evert needed only 545 to reach 500 victories".
