Best of Youtube - Non-tennis

While Steffi was active on the tour, it was rare to get interviews of her or vidoes of her off court activities as TV/internet was not widely available or popular. Thanks to YOUTUBE and some true hard core fans of Steffi, able to watch all of them. Her favourite shots have been discussed and played multiple times, be it on TV or on the internet, but how about some non-tennis related vidoes. Here are some of my favourite videos of her (not in any particular order) and scenes that stood out for me in particular:

Not sure how many times I watched this interview just for one special moment, the interviewer asking Steffi if Andre was OK, Steffi somehow looks at Andre in anticipation even while the interviewer was questioning and laughing out loud when Andre says "marginal", for one moment she even forgets that she is in front of the camera and lets the world see the real Stefanie. Andre for sure can make her feel at ease even in front of the camera. The best Mr.and Mrs. Agassi interview that I have seen.

In this shooting for WWF calendar (guessing it is towards the end of 98 as the calendar was for the year 99), Steffi looks stunningly beautiful and graceful in all the shots and even then, does not overpower the animals or the theme of the shoot. She does have a way with animals for sure. Wonder if Andre ever watched this video.

Just watch closely while Steffi is doing the Bungee Jumping, she tries to pull her shirt down on her way up. Just cute. A refreshing change from today's world where camera angles are being adjusted so that players are not shown inappropriately while playing on court.

Just watch the 4 min mark, the pure, unrestrained happiness on her face is a treasure to watch. Who knew a bald, divorced, emotional Las Vegan could bring in so much happiness that money, name/fame and titles never did.

Wondering what the response from Serena would have been if she was stopped by a police officer for speeding (which seemed to have happened this past week as per her tweets)!!! I might be wrong and she might be completely normal unless it is a chair umpire in a police uniform.
Loved the particular part where she was asked to do lift her hands up and she just starts laughing. Did she really believe that a few sips of Champagne (if it was it in the first place) would get her into trouble as she was the one who confesses to the officer about the drink?

Will try to catch up on a few more next time.

Weekly Musings-4

Another quite week but Steffi's blog about US Open recap surprisingly (or should I say, unsurprisingly) made news for her comments on Serena's behaviour. From Tennis.com to Yahoo to tennis related blogs, the news circulated in the tennis community. Of everything said and written about Serena's behaviour on court during recent US open, her comments were the mildest but since she never says anything about anyone, no wonder it got so much attention. Have to agree with Chris Chase here esp. the last few lines:
"It doesn't sound like much but coming from the guarded, private Graf, it's the equivalent of a stinging rebuke. Graf doesn't stir the pot. When told she's the greatest player ever, she demurs and cites Martina Navratilova . She got married in a private ceremony to Andre Agassi . Other than charitable appearances, she manages to stay out of the limelight, even as her husband continues to stay in it. For her to go out of her way to mention Serena is a surprise; hardly earth-shattering but interesting nonetheless".

Weekly Musings-3

After a busy second week of September, back to normal for Steffi and as always, lying low on the radar.
Few articles and pictures that I thought were worth mentioning.

Since the completion of US open, everyone has been talking about the greatest season 'ever' of Djokovic, hoping that they mean it is on the men's side only as not sure how Steffi's 88 Golden Slam can be surpassed in such discussions as this article rightly discusses about how quick we are to use the word 'ever'.

"We — and by “we” I really mean “I” — use the word “ever” a lot in sports. Best ever. Greatest ever. First time ever. It’s a shortcut word, an easy way to navigate the tricky waters of time AND make an achievement sound really impressive. Someone out there is the best Angry Birds player ever. Someone has written the best iPad review ever. Every so often you will see someone credited with the best tweet ever".

Marti Agassi's fall collection of jewellery and names them after people close to her, this particular one is in the name of Stefanie:

More pictures from the Legend's Ball: Some great pictures, nice to see Steffi helping legendary photographer Russ off the stage.
Just wondering how many GS titles the picture that has Steffi, Martina, Chris Evert, Shriver and Austin is worthy of (doubles and mixed doubles included).
Good to see Capriati in the mix as well but no surprise as she is on the nominations for HOF for next year.

More pictures from Longiness Gala to appear in next month's Town and Country magazine:

And a well deserved US open to Sam Stosur whose idols were Steffi Graf and Monica Seles as a kid. She is one of the few atheletes who is all business in the current generation, no grunting or shreiking or special attention to clothes or make up, a consummate professional just like Steffi. Hope to see more perfomances like the US open from her.

Weekly Musings-2

Seems like Steffi is having a very busy schedule during her NY trip, Kid's clinic followed by Longiness event and then the Legend's Ball as this is Andre's HOF induction year. Here are the articles/photos/videos covering the events in that order:

Reading this article about how tennis is still stuck in the past and so the current generation do not have enough space to make their mark as most retired players either are still visible as commentators or experts on the game reminded me of one player who let the younger generation have their space and promptly stopped making the headlines as "her time is done" and that is Steffi Graf. Ironically, the day this article was published on SI, the main photo on the website leading to the article started with a plague of Steffi on the walls of US Open.
Worth mentioning that from Virgina Wade to Margaret Court to Navartilova to Evert to Seles to Serena Williams (also many other great players and not so great) have autobiographies but not Steffi and per Andre "never going to happen". Respect her for that.

Actions mean more than words and that's Steffis' way of showing admiration to a great player. Interesting perspective since Steffi lost a tough SF match to Martina the same day. Oldies were goldies on that day but for once Martina did not get enough space for her achievement as Connors stole the show.
"On the day Connors beat Krickstein, Steffi Graf was set to play the next match. Twice she was asked if she wanted to move her match to Grandstand so she wouldn't have to wait. Both times she declined, saying she wanted to see Connors play".

And finally from the real world to the world of fantasy: Steffi reached the finals in this fanstasy tournament and guess who her opponent is: Henin. Believe both of them never played against each other as Pros, just in exhibition matches. Fantasy for sure.

A sepcial mention to Kerber for being the first German to make it to US Open SF since Steffi Graf in 96 and she has been flying under the radar despite an incredible tournament. Coincidentally, she was born in 1988, the year of Steffi's Golden Slam.

Weekly Musings

I have been busy with my work and so not able to post regularly and was thinking of a way to organize my thoughts, came up with this idea of doing weekly updates of everything and anything I come across Steffi (news or net) in the last week and so here is first of them.

The best of this week is this fan's encounter with Steffi Graf. I was jealous and happy at the same time, jealous that she was able to meet Steffi in person and happy as she could meet her and even get to take a picture with her. I would have just frozen with excitement if that happened to me. This one sentence sums up how 'unstarly' she is despite being a star athelete.
“Excuse me, are you… Steffi Graf?” I said quietly, not wanting to attract attention. She looked around to see if anyone had heard. “Yes,” she said.
A wonderful read and "words do matter" unless you are Steffi graf who lets her actions be the words.

Richard Williams for one knows how hard it is to win championships in real world and not fantasy match ups as he has successfully coached two of his daughters to become great champions. Here is what he had to say when asked who is the best between Serena, Steffi and Martina. Still remember Richard Williams giving a congratulatory hug to Heidi Graf at Steffi's farewell ceremony at Madison Gardens in 99.

Steffi Graf is doing a kid's clinic in Harlem on Sep 13th.
http://www.10sballs.com/2011/09/03/former-open-champ-graf-to-put-on-kids-clinic-in-harlem/

Reading through this SI article and thinking about the 86 US open SF match, my best memory is Martina trying to pat Steffi on the back for a wonderful effort and Steffi not realizing that, walking away being mad at herself for losing a close match and Martina throwing her hands in the air in exasperation. http://joeposnanski.si.com/2011/09/01/my-favorite-year/

Mrs.Sporty makes it to the top on 'IMPULSE' ratings. Congrats Stefanie.

Not sure why media is so interested in having such 'fantsay contests' but here is one of them to be starting today. Earlier in the week, Steffi was pitted against Venus and almost 84% voted for Steffi (and she is 12 yrs removed from the tennis circuit, who said she is not popular!!!!!)
http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/29/u-s-open-pointcounterpoint-seffi-graf-vs-venus-williams/

And so now, you have Steffi against Serena in SF. Not sure how you can compare retired greats with current players without taking into conisderation the advances in training/technology/medicine and various recovery therapies being used in the modern era.
http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/fantasy-tournament-reaches-semifinals/

I have a few more to post but since this is the first week, will try to catch up with the rest next week.
